    Alien Me

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 02:53 AM CST [General]

I gotta be honest.  I've always thought pregnant women look bizarre.  Grotesque.  Alien.  I've never understood why people always gush about how beautiful the pregnant body is.

My feelings haven't changed now that I'm the bizarre alien body lady.

The thought of getting one of those body casts gives me the willies.

I'm really not trying to be Debbie Downer about the whole pregnancy package, but there just isn't a lot to enjoy about the process.  They never tell you that in the books and websites.

The good thing is that Lily has been kicking away.  Other than a severe case of insomnia tonight (it's almost 3:00 AM) I've been feeling fine.  Especially since I got a new prescription for heartburn medication that I can actually take.  Holy crap, I forgot what it was like to not have heartburn 100% of the time.  Yay, science!

    THIRSTING AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS 56

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 08:52 AM GMT [General]

    Vado,

Actually I did know the basic difference between worsted and wool. Mummy and Daddy sent my brother and me to a posh school so they always made sure that we had worsted trousers so that we were not like the other boys down the road. I was interested to read the Sheepcentre website history of the wool trade, which incidentally does credit Worstead as being the origin of worsted. It says

In East Anglia there was soft water but no hills or fast-running streams to provide power for 'fulling' mills. Fulling or milling is a shrinking process, which makes the fabric firmer and its surface more compact. Instead East Anglia used the long fine wool from its native sheep breeds to produce a cloth, which did not need the fulling process. .........For 400 years East Anglia dominated the worsted trade with skills inherited from the Flemish settlers of 1331.

I note your comments regarding  ostades which may or may not be relevant. In the Domesday Book (1086) the village was called Wresteda (bet your Spellcheck cannot handle that) or Ordested and was given by King Canute before then to the abbots of St Bent of Holme, amid the Norfolk Broads. During the time of Edward the Confessor (1003-1066) the manor was held for the abbots by Robert, an officer of the crossbow men. His son Odo took over the name of De Worstead. The cloth did not, in fact, become known as worsted until the times of Edward II (1284-1327).

As you have said "perhaps we can chase later" or, in this context it would seem appropriate to return to the French Revenons a nos moutons.

I said, following my visit to Dereham, I would probably return to the disparate characters of Bishop Bonner and William Cowper who were both connected with that church, although, thankfully, not at the same time. Bonner was at one time the Rector at Dereham although his fame does not relate to anything parochial. He was an English bishop initially involved in the schism of HenryVIII from Rome but subsequently, upset by the Protestant reforms, he became reconciled to the Roman Catholic Church. He became known as Bloody Bonner for his role in the persecution of heretics under the Catholic Government of Mary I; subsequent detached comment has suggested that this nomenclature was excessive. In 1529 he was Thomas Cardinal Wolsey's chaplain, which brought him to the notice of the king and Thomas Cromwell. He was sent to Rome as the king's agent where he sought to obstruct judicial proceedings against Henry regarding his divorce. For these services Bonner was rewarded with the livings of, inter alia, Dereham. For some years he used his overbearing and dictatorial manner to serve the king throughout Europe. The death of the king in 1547 saw a volte face for Bonner. He had been subservient to the king whilst resisting the innovations of the reformers and holding to the doctrines of the old religion. He came into conflict with the government of the young Edward VI. He was committed to Fleet prison in 1547 but withdrew his opposition and was released. In the next session of Parliament he opposed the first Act of Uniformity and Book of Common Prayer and ended up in jug again, at Marshalsea. He appealed but was condemned to perpetual imprisonment.

Do not worry because help was on its way. When the Catholic Mary came to the throne in 1553 Bonner was immediately released and restored to his see. He restored Roman Catholicism in his diocese, bringing back the Mass and other practices. At this time the reformers were causing a lot of aggro and Mary's advisers thought they would best be dealt with by ecclesiastical tribunals and on Bonner, as Bishop of London, fell the chief burden to stamp out religious dissent. The supporters of Bonner simply said he was not a free agent and had no control of the sentences passed when offenders were passed over to the civil authorities. Some reports suggest that up to 300 heretics were executed because of Bonner but it is thought this is an exaggeration and that the figure was more like 120. It seems he tried hard to reconcile heretics to the Church and also to avert their deaths hence my comment that subsequently it is considered that his nickname of the time, Bloody Bonner, was harsh. Sadly the help that had come with Mary immediately disappeared when Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558 following which he was returned to prison. Despite many legal appeals he was never released and died in Marshalsea in 1569. Up to his death he remained cheerful, never tiring of trying to convert others to Catholicism and never repenting of his crimes to Protestants. Unfortunately this telling of his tale suffers from excessive abbreviation.

William Cowper was a totally different kettle of fish although, like Bonner, he also first qualified as a lawyer. Not surprisingly, this caused him to become a very serious depressive, which, although helped by his adoption of Christianity never fully left him. Cowper is one of our best-known English poets but whilst most people know his name, unlike, say, Wordsworth or Tennyson few could recall anything he wrote. Let me help with some of his most famous: -

God moves in a mysterious way, his wonders to perform

Oh! For a closer walk with God

    Variety's the spice of life

I am monarch of all I survey

And one I like God made the country and man made the town.

I will not throw another lengthy biography at you in this letter but just pause to reflect on a very clever man that feared he was damned to eternal damnation although he sometimes was cheered by evangelical Christianity. Knott claims he was a great influence on the militantly Catholic Manley Hopkins and the militantly agnostic Larkin. I studied English literature but am not competent to express a view on that. He wins my vote, not because of his poetry, but for his love of animals. He kept pet hares and a dog and he would not answer the door of an evening because they had the freedom of the house. Knott describes him briefly and brilliantly as an angst-ridden manic-depressive who sought the company of gentle people and gentle animals. I show part the memorial window of him (with hares and dog) in the church.

I tried to find out more about Bishop Bonner and also the historic breweries and pubs of Dereham by visiting the Bonner Museum but enquiry revealed that this would not be open again until next May and that to try to arrange a private visit was somewhat pointless as most of the exhibits have been removed for the winter. Probably just as well as I have gone on long enough

Turner Prize 2008: culture's Grand National

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 08:49 AM GMT [General]

Everyone knows the point of the Turner Prize. It exists to get contemporary British art onto the front pages of our newspapers once a year. Normally as some sort of comic relief amongst the winners and nominees we've had men in bear suits (Mark Wallinger), male potters in ladies' clothing (Grayson Perry), women's beds (Tracey Emin), people who simply flick light switches on and off (Martin Creed), brothers with dildo obsessions (Jake and Dinos Chapman), not to mention shark-and cow-picklers (Damien Hirst). And last night Mark Leckey, a self-proclaimed 'modern dandy' (he looks like a slimmed-down Justin Lee Collins) whose work acts as a homage to and commentary on recent popular culture, from Felix the Cat to Homer Simpson via James Cameron's Titanic, collected this year's gong from rock star Nick Cave.

    Gallery Photo
In tune with the times: Mark Leckey

'I didn't expect it,' Leckey said after winning (although most of the art-watching public and everyone who worked at a bookmakers did). 'I am chuffed to bits. It's great to do something that has some kind of effect on British culture. Exactly what that effect is, other than the artist becoming  £25,000 richer and having another line to add to his CV is, of course, the big question.

Most critics have complained that this year's shortlisted artists the others being Runa Islam, Goshka Macuga and Cathy Wilkes have been a bit dull, a bit unknown, a bit serious and generally un-Turner Prize-ish. 'Who cares who wins?' wrote this newspaper's Richard Dorment; 'turn up, tune in and drop off' complained Rachael Campbell-Johnston in The Times. It's ironic, really, given that we live in a world in which John Sergeant walks out of 'Strictly Come Dancing' because he's worried about detracting something from the dignity and seriousness of that competition (but that episode, of course, might also indicate that Leckey's work is perfectly in tune with the times). And of course it's not that long ago that everyone was complaining about the fact that the Turner Prize was only about shock and sensation.

Still, 60,000 people have come to see the exhibition in the past two months and here we are talking about a young(ish) British artist. It's also worth remembering that both France and Germany have subsequently come up with similar awards to help propel their artists into the national and international limelight.

But if you want to know what the Turner Prize is really all about you need only look to the fact that most of the recent commentary on Wilkes has revolved around the fact that she had the longest odds ever and that none of the three bets placed on her to win amounted to more than £7.99. The Turner Prize is culture's Grand National. We look at it not only for who's going to win, but also for who's going to take a fall.

THE RISE OF IPW:(A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY)

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 03:32 AM EST [General]

Following the demise of Mania Pro Wrestling in early 2002, it seemed like the possible revival of the long-dormant New Zealand pro-wrestling scene was well and truly dead, and the ring lights had once again been turned off for another decade or two. However, thanks to the determination of the core group of talent that made up MPW, Impact Pro Wrestling was born and aimed to fill the void that had been left. The idea of IPW was simple, a wrestling promotion that was owned and operated by the wrestlers themselves. Sadly, getting IPW up and running was not quite that simple. Impact Pro Wrestling may have had a passionate group of talented wrestlers behind them, but they were lacking training facilities and a ring.

Only a matter of weeks after the demise of MPW, IPW made their first public appearance at the Armageddon Pulp Culture Expo in Auckland. The organisers had to ship up a ring from Wellington just so that the show could go ahead, but it turned out to be money well spent as IPW stole the show, drawing huge crowds every day to witness the hard-hitting athletic action. It was a totally rejuvenated product, and the message was sent loud and clear that IPW was here to stay.

Behind the scenes, the foundations of the company were being built up. Charles Warner, Cameron Bailey, and Nick Fergusson were elected directors of the company, and the core group of around 20 wrestlers set about the arduous task of saving up $10,000 in order to buy a wrestling ring that would allow IPW to begin running regular self-promoted shows. The funds grew weekly, but the wrestlers were frustrated by having to train on gym mats in a recreation centre in South Auckland, with no creative outlet for their efforts. IPW's only other public appearance in 2003 was at the Armageddon Expo in Wellington, which saw the talent get their first opportunity to showcase themselves outside of Auckland, and they managed to impress an audience that had never seen them before. By the end of 2003, the financial target had just about been reached, and the dawning of the true rebirth of professional wrestling in Auckland appeared to be near.

The ring was built in early 2004, and on May 15th, IPW held its first independently promoted show, appropriately titled Genesis. The show managed to turn a profit (no small feat for a independent wrestling promotion) and perhaps even more importantly, got rave reviews from the fans in attendance that night. Since then, Impact Pro Wrestling has promoted a show just about every month, while still appearing at the Armageddon expos in both Auckland and Wellington. With a loyal core fan base that seems to grow just a little bit more at every show, the only way for IPW to go is forwards.

Impact Pro Wrestling functions under the guidance of directors Charles Warner and Cameron Bailey, both of whom appeared on TV1's Close Up programme promoting IPW and trying to spread the word to the many fans of pro wrestling in New Zealand. IPW talent have also appeared on TV3's 'Nightline' and radio station The Rock's 'Morning Rumble'.

IPW engage in regular talent exchanges with Queensland-based promotion Major Impact Wrestling, with several IPW wrestlers appearing regularly on MIW shows, and MIW talent performing at the inter-promotional show 'Rival Turf' in Auckland in August 2004. In addition to regularly crossing the Tasman, in late 2004 former IPW Heavyweight Champion The Machine toured the United States and Canada appearing at various independent wrestling shows. IPW is currently based in Lynfield, having held their monthly shows at the local YMCA there since November.

ROLLINGSTONE: GNR demand apology ffrom Dr. Pepper

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 12:29 AM PST [General]

Guns n' Roses are threatening Dr Pepper with legal action over what the band calls "a complete fiasco" of a publicity stunt. Dr Pepper promised every person in America a free can of soda if Guns n' Roses released Chinese Democracy this year; on November 23rd, the day Democracy was released, fans were told they could get a coupon for a free can at its Website. According to Axl Rose's lawyer, Alan S. Gutman, things went terribly wrong: Yesterday he sent a letter to Dr Pepper CEO Larry Young saying that the soda company's Website crashed and that "the redemption scheme your company clumsily implemented for this offer was an unmitigated disaster which defrauded consumers and, in the eyes of vocal fans, 'ruined' the day of Chinese Democracy's release".

The band is seeking a public apology via ads in newspapers, plus more time for people to claim their free soda and monetary damages. In the words of the letter: "Now it's time to clean up the mess." The letter continues, "As we all now know, Dr Pepper created an expansive and highly-publicized advertising campaign based solely on the exploitation of my clients' legendary reputation. In and of itself this campaign brazenly violated our clients' rights in numerous respects. Unfortunately, Dr Pepper has now magnified the damage this campaign has caused through its appalling failure to make good on a promise it made to the American public."

Other highlights from the letter: "Our clients are outrated at your treatment of their fans and the American public in general. After it became clear that Chinese Democracy would be released in 2008, Dr Pepper executive Tony Jacobs proudly proclaimed that Dr. Pepper would make good on its promise to give a free soda to everyone in America. It turned out that Dr Pepper did not define 'everyone in America' the same way as 'everyone in America' defined 'everyone in America.'" It concludes, "Had you wished to engage in a commercial tie-in with our clients, you should have negotiated a legitimate arrangement instead of hijacking their rights without payment. Rest assured, this misappropriation will not be free."

    The Killers HUGE abroad

Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 12:23 AM PST [General]

While my "home boys" The Killers are an American band, they are a huge success in Britain and overseas in general. Brandon Flowers says of the success:

"We're honored because a lot of the music we love comes from over there, but at the same time we're a little hurt sometimes on the American side of it because we want to be understood here, and I just think that's all it is. I think we are just a little bit misunderstood at the moment."

The Killers will show the U-S some love, when they play Oakland, California on December 11th.  Hopefully they'll add an LA date.

By the way.... this jacked it sweet!!!  Where can I get one?
